Two years earlier, in 1974, both roadster and GT (including the V8) had received the black "5mph" bumpers and an increase in ride height, in much the same way as the Midget had done. The front bumper was shaped to merge into the grille which at least had a token resemblance to the earlier traditional shape. As with the Midget, the weight of the bumpers and increased ride height did nothing to the cars handling, increasing roll and over steer. An attempt was made to rectify this problem in 1976, when stabilizers were fitted to the front and rear suspension, which was quite successful and considerably improved the cars handling.
The MGB continued in this form, with further detail changes to the specification, until production finally came to an end in 1980. By then the car was definitely past its best, but there was no replacement to be had. Development work had been stopped at Abingdon, for British Leyland preferred to concentrate on their Triumph products. It was claimed that BL were losing money on every MGB built, but this was hard to believe since there were few major changes to the cars specification over the years, so development costs must have been recouped long before the end.
However, the end it was, not just for the MGB, but for MG and Abingdon as a separate entity within the British Leyland group. The plant was closed, but the furor this caused among MG enthusiasts around the world caused the parent company to realize that the MG name was a valuable commodity.
While it was thought that the MG name as a sports car manufacturer was dead, the name lived on being carried by a number of BL's sporting saloons, and is now being re-born by the now Rover Group in the guise of new sports cars - the MG RV8 and the new MG MGF.
NEW LIFE COMING TO THE MGB FAMILY OF CARS!!!!!!
The Chinese have acquired the MG Family Auto Business from Rover. A Factory is being developed in Oklahoma. Can't wait to see how this one works out.

THE MGB FEVER WAS SLOW BUT INSIDIOUS
It all started when my cousin in Washington State called and said he had a 1979 MGB he had purchased. He wanted to know if I might be interested in it. The following is the answer.

1972 MG MGB
ROADSTER
RESTORED WITH LOW ORIGINAL with less than 100,000 MILES!!
A classic
British racing green, and a beautiful Prestige special order interior and
convertible top, with overdrive. This spectacular low mileage motorcar has just
gone through an almost complete restoration except for new paint (Previously
painted stripped about 5 years ago), bringing it up to high driver standards.
Where possible, stainless screws and bolts were installed instead of factory
steel.
It is among one of the nicest examples we have ever had the pleasure of offering and it would certainly make the next owner proud! Remember: this is among the last of the chrome-bumper MGB's and, in my opinion, the next model to accelerate in value. For example, in the N.
Work in progress has been ongoing for over one year.
Phase 5 (April 2007): New radio went south, returned to Wal-Mart, replaced with another one that costs twice as much and it works great. Old cigar lighter intermittent, replaced new (for cell phone charger, etc.) Cut out right front fender and mounted the turn signal permanently. Had to drill the trunk lock to open the trunk, replaced the lock with a new one. All gauges and lights are working properly. Replaced speedometer cable, master cylinder, front brake pads, brake hose, and rear brake shoes. Speedometer working, and pretty steady now, used white lithium grease for lubrication this time. Speedometer is about 28% slow due to overdrive installation; proper turns per mile can be calculated. Calibration of the speedometer requires a measurement of 52.8 feet, and counting the turns on the speedometer cable. Furnish information to a speedometer shop for calibration. Still needs window vent rubbers, left window regulator. Then I think it is complete, a neighbor wants first dibs on buying this one, agreed insured value is $15,000.00.
Phase 4 (12-04-2006): Cleaned inside of wheels and installed new Kuhmo 185x75x14 tires. Tachometer quit working, replaced tachometer and it blipped for a tenth of a second, not working yet. Fuel, temp gauges, headlights and wipers are all working. Installed a new sending unit to get the fuel gauge working, this was after getting a voltage stabilizer installed and working properly, new one went south, and I had to replace it.
Still need to install the new master cylinder, check the brakes on the left front and both rear, change a flattened brake line on the left rear, new rubber in the window vents, new regulator in the left window, cut out the left front fender to install the turn signal light, sandblast and repaint all 5 wheels, install a new trunk lock.
PHASE 3: Installed the tunnel, and top. Windshield and Interior are completely installed. Fuel and Temp gauges are still inoperative. Replaced the SU carburetors with a new Weber Kit, with a new pierce manifold. Headlights only work on high beam, and the windshield wipers are inoperative again. Still have some work to do. Doesn't the interior from UK look great? Material etc. worked out great, only problem I had with the interior is the section over the battery.
Phase 2: The exterior is almost complete with replacement of all molding, headlight assemblies, running lights and lens (original Lucas). The overdrive, drive shaft and Universal Joints have been installed along with a new AF-FM Radio CD player, New Crane Coil, and other miscellaneous parts.
Phase 1: Not running, tires flat, parts were removed by a paint shop in NC either by cutting or sawing, and grinding. Not much left but a body shell with a few parts including a broken windshield lying inside the car. Car was repainted but not finished off about 5 years ago. There are some small issues with the paint.
N.A.D.A. on the internet, 12 months ago, it topped out at $17K+, Three months ago it topped out at $22,800. Also, to confirm the value, an MGB brought $22K at auction in Denver the first part of this year (Note: not show quality). To find a low-mileage car that has a restoration almost from the ground up and in this condition is a terrific find! The investment potential will grow far beyond your imagination, so bid with confidence. For the astute collector, investor or enthusiast who only wants the best, bid with confidence. You will not be disappointed in this truly one-of-a-kind find. N.A.D.A. check on 8-09-2007, high restored is $23,450.00.

My MGB was shipped from Washington State on A Mobile Parking Lot in April 2004. Since then, it has become a fun source for fixing up, and pouring money into the abyss. There's an old saying, the only difference between a boat, airplane, or toy auto is the material in which the hole is surrounded in which you pour money. True Words.
The plate on the rear surrounding the tag states "Sometimes when it's hot, I drop the top". This is definitely true.
The following parts were replaced before shipping in April, 2004. Brakes - front and rear, Tires, Magnum wheels, Clutch, Clutch master Cylinder, Clutch & Pressure plate. Single Weber Carburetor with intake manifold. Exhaust manifold with new muffler and tail pipe. Battery. Side body molding. A frame, fulcrum pin kit, Wishbone Arm R/H, and A Frame Arm. Windshield washer pump. Seat Cushions, covers, webbing, and back seat stiffener. Seat Kit upholstery. Hood Insulation. Window corner Blocks. Trunk Carpet with spare tire cover, Steering Wheel Cover.
